When I’m Vibe Coding, I feel like a D.J. 🎛️

Yesterday, I did some Vibe Building (or Vibe Coding as everyone likes to call it), building a side project I am working on for a while (stay tuned).

I have tried several platforms and landed with my favourite one which is Lovable. I am not a software developer, but I learnt how to code when I built my first startups and forced myself to learn to build our websites (that was before no-code platforms existed) and even native iPhone apps with Swift. So, I’m a builder, but not a coder.

The feeling with Vibe Coding is different, more like making music (and yes, I play the Piano 🎹 and guitar 🎸 ):

- Vibe Building is like running a sequence of experiments and writing a prompt is like hitting a pad in a DJ console. You hit the enter button, and you need to see what you get — listen carefully to the unexpected. It’s not always what you want or expected, and you have to try again and fine tune.

- When you D.J. your are mixing familiar tracks into one cohesive track which is your creation, and that people love and dance to. I feel that Vibe Coding is really the same when I remix libraries, and snippets with improvised logic to create something fresh that users would love.

- It’s the sequence that matter. It’s important to orchestrate and plan what feature you are building first. I did the mistake of going full blown with lots of features just throwing prompts, and jumping from feature to feature. It’s like creating music, you better plan which instrument take the lead and then add the trumpet, drums etc.

- Every time I iterate, or add another feature, I review the entire output (in my case a web app). Like a D.J. listening to the entire song altogether after every alteration. You can’t really separate and focus on each feature alone. And once you add more and more instruments, it’s becoming exhausting and a bit repetitive.

- When I vibe code, I go to “Flow State”. I recommend you to read FLOW by Dr. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi to understand more, but in short, I lose track of time and very similar of making music, it’s just embracing yourself with the creative experience.

For me, Vibe Building is more of an art than science, but I learn how to play, plan and write the notes and developing my flow bit by bit.
